Capt. Doug's Style of Fishing Snook Snook techniques Snook fishing in many ways is a lot like trout fishing. The biggest difference is snook are typically more structure oriented. Snook like trout are surface feeders. Snook are also very sound and movement shy. And finally snook are incredibility hard fighting fish. I tell my clients that snook will test every skill you thought you had. My favorite way to fish snook is with small top water plugs. The trick here is the casts up under docks, under mangroves and all the other places you could get hung-up. Once you get the cast all you need is a short fast retrieve. Then when you get the hookup comes the challenge of trying to get you lure and the fish out of whatever you cast into. The main factors at play when it comes to snook fishing are getting an early start and finding bait in that structure. I know I'm in for a good day when I find glass minnows near docks or mangroves. Another trick for finding snook is looking along the mangroves for bubbles or froth. Like froth from something busting. I have to take one thing back. The early start. Even though most snook feed all night on full moons I have caught some of my best fish in the middle of the afternoon during the summer. It was on days we had a new moon.
