Capt. Doug's Style of Fishing Redfish My Redfish Technique If Redfish are eating they will eat they will eat almost anything. I say that because I had a friend that caught on on a Vena Sausage when I was a kid. The most effective way to sight fish reds is to let them do what they are doing and try to get a cast close enough without spooking them. My favorite way of doing this is to watch and see which way the fish are facing and put my lure over and in front of them. This way as I retrieve my lure I will be bringing it just in front of them. Once your lure is where you want it, watch the school or fish to see what he is doing. Ideally your lure hitting the water hasn't thrown up a flag. If everything is good and the fish haven't spooked off start your retrieve. Keep in mind that your lure is a bait fish wondering into the kill zone. If you do anything out of the ordinary you will spook them. I always tell my clients to be the bait. What would you do if you stumbled into a school of something that was going to eat you. (remember your injured so jumping in the boat isn't an option). DO NOT STOP YOUR LURE!!! We do not have baitfish that plays possum. One of my tricks I have a lot of luck with is why a red starts to come after my lure I work it a little harder. A lot of times this will draw a harder strike. Always keep in mind you don't want to spook the school. In the event you do, DO NOT CHASE THE FISH!!! Try sitting still and waiting. If a school is feeding hard in an area they will most likely come back. If they continue pushing off, let them. Follow them but stay far enough away to let the go back to feeding. Most of the time they will only push off 20 to 50 feet before they go back to tailing. You may even find they they will come to you after a few minutes. I have worked one school of fish for 9 hours and pulled fish after fish out of the school. I did this by only casting to them while they were tailing.
